2024 Marks the 50th Year of FARB!
The idea to form the federation grew out of a meeting of representatives of several health licensing boards in June 1972. In September 1973 the group agreed to organize. And in 1974, several national health regulatory associations created the Federation of Associations of Health Regulatory Boards (FAHRB).
On January 8, 1974, the Articles of Incorporation were filed in the State of Illinois.
On February 16 – 17 of that year, FAHRB met in Chicago to formally approve a constitution and bylaws and elected the following board members:
- President Fred T. Mahaffey, National Association of Boards of Pharmacy
- Vice President Dr. John Robinson, International Association of Boards of Optometry
- Secretary/Treasurer BJ Crawford, American Association of Dental Examiners
- Richard Vincent, Federation of State Chiropractic Examining Boards
- Ann Kuba, Council of State Boards of Nursing
- Dr. MH Crabb, Federation of State Medical Boards
- William Steigman, American Osteopathic Association
- Dr. EJ Hannity, Federation of Podiatry Boards
- Dr. Edward Loveland, American Association of State Psychology Boards
- Dr. Robert R. Shomer, Association of American State Boards of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine
- John F. Atkinson, Attorney, served as a consultant for the board.

Dear FARB community,
We are very pleased to announce that the Federation of Associations of Regulatory Boards, effective immediately, is now receiving its association management services from WJ Weiser (Weiser). Weiser succeeds the law firm of Atkinson & Atkinson, whose work in founding and sustaining FARB through its growth over many years is acknowledged and greatly appreciated. In particular, we extend our sincere thanks to outgoing FARB Executive Director Dale Atkinson for leading FARB to this juncture of progress and possibilities.
We at FARB are thrilled to have new management with this well-known Association Management firm. Weiser is a full service Association Management Company servicing over 90 specialty and subspecialty societies on the international, national, regional, and state levels. For many years, Barbara was a key part of the Atkinson & Atkinson team that supported FARB, and we look forward to working with her again in this new capacity.
With the transition in management there will be some minor changes to member processing. The website address remains the same, farb.org, but the site will be updated and there will be a new member portal. You will receive additional information about your new profile once it is ready to access.
On behalf of the FARB Executive Board, I would like to express our excitement about embarking on a new chapter for FARB. We are sincerely looking forward to a successful and productive partnership with the Weiser team.
